Kerryman Article 14/4/08

There were five medals for Kerry athletes at the 2nd weekend of the
Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Indoor championships in Nenagh, with Farranfore
Maine Valley taking three of them. Siblings Niall (U19) and Emma
Prendiville (U16) both took gold in their 1500m walks and club mate Daniel
Clifford made it a trio of gold’s winning the U19 shot with a putt over 1m
longer than the silver placed athlete. Andrew Kearney of Tralee Harriers
had a clear jump at 1.88m to take the gold in the U18 high jump and the
only other Kerry medal winner was Eilish Fitzpatrick of Gneeveguilla who
narrowly missed out on first place to take silver in the U18 200m. Well
done also to James Lyne, Sophie Wolff and Connor Slattery (all St Brendans
AC), Eoin O’Muircheartaigh (Lios Tuathail), Danny O’Connor (Tralee
Harriers), Denis Hayes (Farranfore/Maine Valley), and Julie Prendiville
(Estuary AC) who put in a huge amount of effort but didn’t make the medals
this time.

The Kilnaboy 10 mile road race is the 4th and final race in the Munster 10
mile 'Classic' series. It was held on Sunday last.
It is one of the oldest 10 mile road races in the country, outside of
Ballycotton. The slightly undulating circuit through the Burren poses a
fair but tough challenge.
Donal O’Callaghan (An Ríocht) has been impressive over the series and put
in a great time of 54.45 to finish 4th in the race and took himself to 2nd
place in the 4 race series. Eoin McKenna (An Ríocht) , was 6th in 56.40.
In the Over 45s, Tom Shanahan again An Ríocht finished 1st,in 1.01.46 hrs,
he is having a great season. Gneeveguilla had four runners competing,
Robert Tate finished in 67 mins, Olivia Fitzgerald 83 mins, Mary O’Connell
and Nora Flynn 90mins. Mary was using the race as a training run for her
trip to the US next weekend for the Boston Marathon so good luck for
that. (photo of Donal O’Callaghan)
