Tullamore was the venue on Saturday for the AAI National Team Competition U 10-U12 and the AAI National U9-U12 Inter Club Relays competition. Clubs from all over the country took part and Kerry athletes bought back 7 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals in their team events and relays. A special mention to all those athletes and the supporters who made the long journey up to Offlay but didn’t make the medals this time well done to you all. Girls U10 300m Team event 2. Tullamore also held Round 2 of the National track and field league on Sunday with Ríocht athletes finishing 2nd place in the points table with 109pts. Ciaran McCabe came 2nd in the long jump, and high jump and won the 400m while Phillip Kearney took the pole vault with a PB of 3m40cm, won the 110m, and 400m hurdles. Tomas Griffin won the 200m and came 2nd in the 100m. Joe O Connor and Donal O'Callaghan represented Ríocht in the distance events, first up for Joe was the 3000m steeple chase which he easily won before moving on to claim a second place finish in the 800m. Donal followed Joe's example by winning the 1500m and later placing second in the 5000m. Their 4x400m relay team came third.
Athletics Ireland have announced their European Cup Team for the 21-22nd June. The Women’s team will compete in Leiria, Portugal in the 1st League Group A. Tralee’s own top athlete Claire Fitzgerald of Tralee Harriers will compete in the Discus event, in a competition which will also see Derval O’Rourke, Joanne Cuddihy , Roisin McGettigan , Fionnuala Britton and Ireland’s top field eventer Eileen O’Keeffe, many of whom will be competing in Beijing later on in the summer. Dennis Finnegan of Spa Muckross will be competing in the mens event in the 2nd League Group A in Tallin, Estonia that will see the likes of Paul Hession, David Gillick, Thomas Chamney and David McCarthy also competing for qualification to Beijing. Athletics Ireland has also announced the team for Mannheim, Germany Junior International on 21-22nd June. The team has been selected to give athletes who either have or are very close to World Junior Qualification standards the opportunity to compete at a high international level. The team includes Gneeveguilla AC athlete Eilish Fitzpatrick who will compete in the 100m relay. We wish them luck in their endeavours.
The Grandon BHAA 5 mile road race took place in Glamire on Wednesday and from the 375 finishers Donal O’Callaghan and Tim o’Connor both from An Riocht were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Tralee Harriers held their open sports on Wednesday last and although the weather was very wet and miserable the turnout was good. St Brendans (see attached photo)won the trophy for the best overall club with Eoin O’Carroll(see attached photo) and Ciara Walsh both of Tralee Harriers picking up awards for best athletes. At the University of Limerick against Dartmouth and Brown universities of the US on Saturday, Claire Fitzgerald of Tralee Harriers won the discus and Daniel Clifford of Farranfore/Maine Valley won a medal in the shot.
