Wednesday 16th July saw the Kerry AAI Sen/Jun championships take place at
the Castleisland Track on a dry but fairly windy and cold evening. The
turnout was great and there were many guest competitors using the event
for training and experience. Patsy O’Connor took gold in the Sen. Men’s
Shot and Javelin, silver in the 56lb for distance, and bronze in the
Discus and kept everyone entertained with his jokes and antics. Pasty’s
son Alan was on the podium with his dad for the same events taking 2
silvers and 2 bronzes, they both must have had their porridge that morning
! Seasoned runner Cian Murphy, Iveragh ran an impressive race to finish
the mens 3km race in 1st place as did champion long distance runner
Maureen Harrington, Ríocht to finish the womens 3km first. In the Javelin
Mary T Moynihan threw over 12m further than her nearest competitor to win.
It was a great night and the addition of the electronic timing enabled the
results to be taken accurately and quickly which in turn meant the events
moved on quickly.
