The Irish Team who competed in the Aviva England Athletics Indoor Open Championships in Birmingham over the weekend had a number of impressive performances. Tralee’s Clare Fitzgerald was third in the U20 Shot Putt in a personal best of 13.60m just short of the Junior Indoor Record of 13.66m
There was more action from across the water on Sat and Sun with the Bank of Scotland U13/U15 Indoor Championships at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. On Saturday, Daniel Shanahan of St Brendans AC won the Pole Vault and Eoin O’Carroll of Tralee Harriers, hot off the success of the previous weekend won the Long Jump. Aoife O’Carroll of Tralee Harriers came third in the U13 Girls long jump. The Munster Schools Cross-Country Championships at Tramore Racecourse took place during the week. Kerry had 4 medal winners, With Niamh De Hora winning the junior girls race for her school Pobal Scoil, Chorca Dhuibhne.
Minor Boys 2, Cillian. O’Donovan (Colaiste na Sceilge, Caherciveen) Teams: 2, Colaiste na Sceilige, Caherciveen, 60 pts
Intermediate Girls: 2, Mary. Fitzgerald (Colaiste na Sceilige, Caherciveen) Teams: 2, Intermediate School, Killorglin, 56 pts
Junior Girls: 1, Niamh. de Hora (Pobal Scoil, Chorca Dhuibhne)
Minor Girls 3, Hannah. O’Sullivan (Boherbue Comprehensive School)
At The Intervarsities Indoor Championships at Nenagh Daniel Clifford won the shot with a PB of 13.60, with Niall Prendiville also of Farranfore Maine Valley coming 3rd in the walk. Daniel is competing next weekend as part of the Irish team at the Celtic Cup games in Wales.
Jonathon Foley of Farranfore/Maine Valley was in action at the All Ireland Junior Indoors in Santry where he came 3rd in the pole vault.
At the Munster AGM held at Lawlors Hotel in Dungarven last Saturday evening, Michael Godley was re-elected as IT Officer and Paddy O’Donnaghue was re-elected as Hon Treasurer, both men were highly praised for the work.
