Kerryman Article 9/11/09

The Munster Intermediate and Uneven age cross country championships were
held in a muddy Tralee racecourse on Sunday last.Numbers were huge with
over 100 athletes in most races with the boys u11 having the biggest entry
on the day.
In this race Kerry took their only team title of the day with Patrick
Warren Gneeveguilla taking gold,Fiachra Clifford Star of the Laune
third,Eoghan McElligott St Brendans fourth,Adam O Donoghue An Riocht
fifth,Dara Lowth St Brendans sixth and Sean Galvin Lios Tuathaill
19th.This team looks like they will put in a serious title challenge at
the national championships in Derry on December 6th.
Aoife Doyle of Star of the Laune got the day off to a great start with
a second place in the girls u9 and lead the Kerry team to third spot
with Kaitlin Moriarty 8th and Cara Daly 12th both Kenmare,Orla Cullen
and Abigail Lynch Lios Tuathaill with Ruth Courtney Spa Muckross
finishing the make up of the team.In the boys u13 Adam King was the
sole medallist with a silver medal behind a very strong Clare
athlete.Cillian O Donovan Iveragh picked up fifth place in the u15 boys
a year out of age with Liam O Connell Iveragh in seventh,David O Keeffe
Gneeveguilla in 9th and Brian Sugrue in tenth.Iveragh AC took the club
team title here with Andy Quigley making up their team.Kerry also
picked up the silver in this event with Kevin O Sullivan Star of the
Laune the fifth member of the team with the previous five.Niamh De Hora
ran a comfortable u17 womens 2km to take third spot with Niamh Clifford
squeezing in to make the Munster team for Derry in twelfth spot.Tadgh
Moore Gneeveguilla finished in an incredible fifth place in probably
the strongest age group on the day ahead of some notable Irish Juvenile
internationals;what makes the feat even more impressive is that he did
it in his bare feet and off very little athletics training in his first
cross country race of the season! The last juvenile medal on the day
came from the ever consistant Mary Fitzgearld who picked up silver in
the girls u19.
By the time the Intermediate races came along the course was very cut
up and very hard to run on.This did not deter the Gneeveguilla womens
team who worked hard to finish in second place in the team event with
Caroline Murphy,Margaret O Leary,Martina O Leary and Brid Stack.In the
Intermediate mens Tim O Connor Riocht finshed in a well earned tenth
place.
